Audition Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring to the audition? You will want to bring your music (if you’re auditioning for a musical), appropriate footwear, and a water-bottle. Your calendar is helpful, too, because you will need to list any and all conflicts between auditions and the show’s closing. If your monologue requires props. Bring those as well. We will have chairs and books, should you need those.
What should I wear? Wear clothes that are comfortable, and in which you look presentable. We will do a vocal and dance audition, so make sure you can move freely. If you have jazz shoes, bring them. However, there is no need to purchase dance shoes just for an audition. Please do not dress like a character from the show as it limits how the directors see you.
What kind of song should I sing? Choose from the list of songs from the show and find one that shows off the finest qualities of your voice. Make sure that the range is appropriate as the accompanist will not transpose the key to fit your voice.
Can I audition for a specific role only? Yes and no. Our first round of auditions are “general auditions.” There is a spot on your audition form there’s a space to check if you’ll only accept certain roles. Please be aware that requesting a specific role does not give you a better chance of receiving the role, but actually limits your ability to make the cast if you do not receive your requested role.
Should my song be memorized? No, but it would show your work ethic in your preparation and also allow you to be a better actor and performer while singing.
How long should my audition song last? Auditions will last three minutes each for your vocal and dance audition.
What is a callback? A callback is the second round of auditions in which the creative team has people dance, sing, and read from the show. After they have seen what they need at callbacks, they will develop the cast list.
Where are callback and cast lists posted? The callback and cast list will be posted outside the choir room and on the Lincoln Way East Music Website
If my name is not on the callback list, does that mean I wasn’t cast? Not necessarily. Please check the cast list regardless of whether or not you received a callback.
What do I do if I am not cast? Accept it gracefully, and consider it a learning experience. Also consider becoming a member of the crew. It is a wonderful way to be involved in the show.
As always, please check out our Audition Workshops. They will give you a jump-start on the audition process! Even if you’ve auditioned before, these are still very helpful!
